São Miguel has no shortage of “must see” lists written by people who spent 48 hours here and took 300 drone shots. This is not that.

This is the real list. The places actually worth your time if you want the best of the island without wasting half your trip on overrated nonsense.

Some are famous for good reason. Some are quieter local gems. Some are beautiful but require patience because everyone and their grandmother will be there in summer.

    Let’s get into it.

    Bathing Areas (Hot Springs)

One of the coolest places on the island. A natural ocean pool heated by volcanic hot springs. Timing matters a lot here because low tide is where the magic happens. At the right time, it feels amazing. At the wrong time, it feels like cold regret.

The famous giant orange thermal pool everyone photographs. Yes, it stains your swimsuit. Yes, tourists love it. And yes, it’s still worth doing at least once. Very relaxing, very iconic, very warm soup vibes.

Probably the prettiest thermal bathing spot on the island. Jungle vibes, waterfall, hot water, lush forest everywhere. Feels like someone dropped a tropical spa in the middle of a volcano.

Smaller thermal pools in Furnas with warm iron-rich water. Very relaxing, but it gets crowded fast. Go early or late unless your dream holiday includes boiling slowly with 200 strangers.

    Lakes

Probably the most dramatic lake on the island. Wild, protected, and still feels untouched compared to some other tourist-heavy spots. When the weather cooperates, it looks unreal. When fog arrives, congratulations, you paid for clouds.

Less famous than Sete Cidades, but the Furnas area as a whole makes it special. Lake, fumaroles, cozido, thermal weirdness, all in one place. More about atmosphere than the lake itself.

Yes, it’s famous. Yes, it’s on every postcard. And yes, you should still go. The viewpoint is the real star here. Just don’t expect solitude, expect buses.

    Gardens & Parks

One of the more underrated places in Furnas. Beautiful forest paths, waterfalls, old abandoned romantic vibes. Less polished than Terra Nostra, which honestly makes it better.

Easy waterfalls, lush green scenery, old watermills, and no need for heroic hiking. Great stop if you want nature without pretending you enjoy suffering uphill for three hours.

Even if you skip the thermal pool, the botanical garden itself is excellent. Huge trees, exotic plants, peaceful paths. One of the best maintained gardens on the island and not just Instagram bait.

    Local Gems

One of the best summer experiences on the island. A volcanic islet with a natural swimming lagoon inside. Beautiful and unique. Also seasonal, so don’t show up in winter expecting miracles.

A lava tube under Ponta Delgada that most tourists completely miss. Short visit, but genuinely interesting. Nice change from “look, another viewpoint.”

Right in the center of Ponta Delgada and easy to ignore if you rush past it. Don’t. Beautiful historic church with real presence, especially at night when the square lights up.

The earth literally steaming in front of you. Strong sulfur smell included for free. This is where the famous cozido gets cooked underground, because apparently normal kitchens were too boring.

Europe’s oldest tea plantation and still working. Beautiful tea fields, free visit, and actual local history instead of fake tourist theatre. Very worth the stop.

    Trails

Beautiful trail near Faial da Terra with waterfalls, forest, and a tiny restored village that looks frozen in time. Great hike if you want something memorable without needing mountaineering insurance.

One of the best coastal and waterfall trails on the island. Lots of green, lots of water, lots of stairs. Your legs may complain, but your photos will be smug.

    Viewpoints

Simple, easy, and one of the best north coast views. Big cliffs, open ocean, dramatic coastline. Great stop that requires almost zero effort, which is honestly a feature.

The celebrity viewpoint. This is the famous Sete Cidades postcard shot. Absolutely stunning when visible. Also absolutely full of humans with phones.

One of the easiest scenic stops for volcanic ridge views and green landscapes. Not flashy, just consistently beautiful and often ignored by people chasing only Instagram-famous spots.
