What to Do in São Miguel When It Rains

If you are visiting São Miguel and wake up to terrible weather outside, welcome to the Azores 😂

Honestly, bad weather here is basically lottery mode. You can have heavy rain in one part of the island and sunshine 20 minutes away. Sometimes the forecast says rain all day and suddenly the sky completely changes two hours later.

So first thing: rain does NOT automatically mean your trip is ruined.

Actually, some experiences in São Miguel are even better when the weather is bad.

Hot Springs Are Actually BETTER in the Rain

This sounds completely counterintuitive, but trust me, rainy days are literally the best days to visit the hot springs.

There is something ridiculously good about sitting in hot thermal water while it rains outside. The contrast between the cold weather and the warm water is amazing.

Local tip: bring a plastic bag and put your clothes, wallet, phone, and backpack inside. Close it properly and you won’t care if it rains like crazy outside.

My favorite hot springs on the island:

Honestly, foggy and rainy weather makes these places feel even more magical. ❤️

    Tea Factories

Rain and fog actually work surprisingly well with São Miguel’s tea plantations.

Instead of looking gloomy, the whole landscape becomes moodier, greener, and more cinematic.

    The two classic stops are:

Even if the weather outside is bad, you can still visit inside and learn a little bit about the tea production.

    Pineapple Plantations

One of the safest rainy-day activities on the island.

Most pineapple plantations are partially indoors, easy to visit, and perfect when the weather is ugly outside.

Also, it is one of those things that is genuinely unique to São Miguel and not just another tourist trap.

    Lava Caves

Rain outside? Perfect. Go underground 😂

Gruta do Carvão is probably the best example. It is one of the most interesting volcanic caves you can visit in Ponta Delgada and a great backup plan for bad-weather days.

    Museums

Normally museums are not the main reason people visit the Azores, let’s be honest.

But if the weather is really bad all day, they can still be a good option for a slower afternoon.

Museu Carlos Machado is probably the most famous one in Ponta Delgada.

Rainy Days Are PERFECT for Food

Bad weather in São Miguel naturally creates the perfect excuse to slow down and eat properly.

    This is the moment for:

Honestly, Furnas in rainy weather has an incredible atmosphere. Steam everywhere, fog in the trees, hot food, thermal activity… it almost feels cinematic.

Don’t Waste Your Day Chasing Foggy Viewpoints

This is probably the most important local advice in this entire article.

A lot of tourists make the same mistake:
they see “Sete Cidades” on Instagram, jump into the car, drive 40 minutes uphill… and arrive to completely white fog with zero visibility.

Before driving to viewpoints, ALWAYS check the webcams first.

SpotAzores is incredibly useful for this because you can see live webcams from different parts of the island and quickly understand where the weather is better.

Sometimes the north side is terrible and the south side is completely sunny.

Trust me, checking the webcams first can save half your day.
