    Climbing Mount Pico

    Quick Summary

"On top of Portugal. Literally above the clouds."

    Rui's experience

Mount Pico is the highest mountain in Portugal, standing at 2,351 meters. And yes, you feel every single meter of it.

I did it in winter on purpose. I wanted snow. Pico is the only place in the Azores where you can actually see snow and ice regularly in winter, and at the summit it feels like a completely different world. Cold, raw, dramatic.

The best part? At some point you’re literally above the clouds. Not metaphorically. Actually above them. It feels unreal.

It’s a long hike. Especially in winter, it takes hours to reach the top. But technically it’s not extreme mountaineering. You don’t need ropes or advanced climbing skills. There’s a marked trail, and with a certified guide it’s absolutely doable if you’re in decent shape.

Edit: Thanks to feedback from a visitor of this site, Silvio, it appears that going with a guide is not mandatory. Instead, climbers need to book a timeslot and receive a GPS device with an emergency button before starting the ascent. According to Silvio, guides may also check your equipment and give some recommendations before you begin.

Weather can change fast, and the mountain still demands respect.

If you like trails, altitude, dramatic landscapes, and doing something that feels like a real achievement, this is one of the strongest experiences you can have in the Azores.

    I strongly recommend it.

    Where to Do This

    Pico Island.

There are multiple certified mountain guide companies on the island that organize guided ascents year-round. Just book in advance, especially in summer.

It is not required to go with a guide. Though one needs to book a timeslot and gets a GPS device with a button for emergency calls. I guess they also look at your outfit and one gets some hints at the start.
