Kayaking
Quick Summary
"Slow down. Get on the water. See it differently."
Rui's experience
I did this a couple of years ago in Sete Cidades Lake with my wife and kids, and it was one of those perfectly simple afternoons.
Kayaking isn’t about adrenaline. It’s about perspective.
We’re used to seeing Sete Cidades from the viewpoints, from above, from the classic postcard angle. But being on the water changes everything. You see the crater walls from below. You feel how massive the place really is. It’s quiet. Calm. Very relaxing.
It’s super family-friendly. No special skills needed. Just decent weather and a good mood. We took our time, paddled around, stopped, talked, enjoyed the silence.
If you want something active but still chill, this is it.
Where to Do This
You can kayak in several places in the Azores.
-
Sete Cidades Lake (São Miguel) — where I did it. There are small rental companies right by the lake, almost street-vendor style. You just show up and rent.
-
At sea — check the marinas around the islands. Several companies offer guided coastal kayaking tours.
If I had to choose again? Lake first. It’s calmer, easier, and perfect for families.
