    Scuba Diving

    Quick Summary

    "Different world. Same ocean."

    Rui's experience

I haven’t dived in a while, but when I used to, it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in the Azores.

The underwater world here is unreal. Clear water, volcanic rock formations, caves, marine life, and dramatic drop-offs. It feels raw and untouched.

I’ve dived in places like Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, near São Roque, and at Praia das Milícias, where there’s a sunken boat called the Dori. And that’s just São Miguel. Across the archipelago, there are incredible dive spots.

It’s not tropical reef diving. It’s Atlantic diving. Stronger character. Colder water. More dramatic landscapes.

And yes, small fun fact: I proposed to my wife underwater during a dive. So for me, this isn’t just an activity. It’s tied to one of the biggest moments of my life.

    That alone makes it unforgettable.

If you’re certified, do it. If you’re not, try a beginner dive with a licensed center. The Azores is one of the best places in Europe for diving.

    Where to Do This

You’ll find dive companies all over the Azores, especially around the marinas on the main islands.

The course I did was with Azores Sub, in Vila Franca do Campo. Very professional team, well organized, and I had a great experience with them.

Whether it’s São Miguel, Pico, Faial, or Santa Maria, you’ll find certified operators offering beginner dives, guided dives, and more advanced experiences.

Just go with licensed professionals and respect the ocean.
