    Snorkeling

    Quick Summary

    "Mask on. World off."

    Rui's experience

This one I do every single summer. No exception.

Whenever I go to places like Mosteiros, Caloura, or Vila Franca do Campo, I bring my mask. And now my kids do the same. I’ve officially spread the virus.

Snorkeling in the Azores is ridiculously underrated. You don’t need tanks, courses, or complicated gear. Just a mask, maybe fins, and you’re in.

Volcanic rock formations, natural pools, small caves, schools of fish moving around you. The water is clear, especially on calm summer days, and you can spend hours just floating and exploring.

I personally prefer the south coast of São Miguel. The water is usually calmer and more predictable. But there are great spots on the north side too if the sea allows it.

For me, it’s not even a “tourist activity”. It’s a summer ritual.

    Simple. Accessible. Always worth it.

    Where to Do This

On São Miguel, some of my favorite spots:

There are also good snorkeling spots on the north coast, but conditions matter a lot. Always check the sea state before going in.

No booking needed. Just bring your gear and common sense.
