Tea Plantation
Quick Summary
"Tea, in Europe. Yes, really."
Rui's experience
This is one of those things people don’t believe until they see it.
The Azores is the only place in Europe that cultivates and produces tea commercially. And it’s not a gimmick. It’s real production, real export, real history.
In São Miguel, you can visit tea plantations, and the biggest and most famous one is Gorreana Tea Plantation.
You can walk through the fields, follow a small trail around the plantation, and see the factory inside. The machinery is old-school, almost vintage, and they’ve kept that style on purpose. It feels authentic, not modernized for Instagram.
Best part? You can taste the tea for free.
Black tea. Green tea. No pressure. No ticket. Just walk in, try it, and if you like it, buy some.
It’s simple, it’s honest, and it’s very Azorean.
It’s not a massive, flashy attraction. It’s quiet, green, and calm. But it’s unique in Europe, and that alone makes it worth stopping by.
Where to Do This
On São Miguel island, you can visit:
-
Gorreana Tea Plantation – the largest and most famous.
-
Chá Porto Formoso – smaller, but also visitable.
I personally recommend starting with Gorreana. It’s the most complete experience.
