    Whale & Dolphin Watching

    Quick Summary

"Meeting giants in their own house."

    Rui's experience

I’ve done whale watching twice in the Azores, both times with Futurismo, and it’s one of the few experiences that genuinely exceeds expectations.

And here’s something important: the Azores is considered one of the best places in the world for whale and dolphin watching. It has even been recognized by National Geographic as one of the top destinations globally for this experience.

That’s not marketing fluff. It’s geography.

We’re in the middle of the Atlantic, on migratory routes, with deep ocean very close to shore. That combination makes encounters frequent and diverse.

Seeing whales in the open Atlantic is different from seeing animals in a zoo or on TV. You suddenly understand scale. These aren’t just “big animals”. They are enormous, calm, powerful beings moving through deep water like it’s effortless.

It shifts your sense of proportion. And your respect.

What I liked most was how the experience was handled. Before going out, there’s a proper safety briefing. On the boat, they explain the species, how spotting works, and why distance matters. They don’t chase animals. They don’t crowd them. They clearly prioritize the wildlife over the photo.

That matters. It’s not chaos tourism. It’s controlled, respectful, and educational.

If you come to the Azores and skip whale watching, you’re skipping something that is legitimately world-class.

    Where to Do This

There are many companies across the islands. The one I personally did, twice, is Futurismo in Ponta Delgada.

I can only speak about them because that’s my real experience. I liked their professionalism, their respect for wildlife, and the way they explain what’s happening instead of just rushing you toward animals.

Are there other good companies? Probably.

    Have I tried them? No.

So my recommendation is based on experience, not comparison.
