Can Azoreans instantly spot a tourist?
Yes. Immediately. Almost scientifically fast.
And I’m not talking about the obvious cases. Not the tall blonde guy with socks and sandals. That’s easy mode. I’m talking about people who look like us. Brown hair. Brown eyes. Could easily pass as Portuguese.
Still, we know.
It’s the shoes sometimes. The hiking boots in the middle of town. The brand-new outdoor jacket when it’s barely windy. It’s the pace. Either walking too slowly while scanning every building, or walking too fast but stopping every three meters to check Google Maps. It’s the confusion level at roundabouts. That one never fails.
There’s a certain energy. A slight hesitation. A “where am I and why is this road so narrow?” vibe.
Locals don’t even consciously analyze it. It’s instinct. Years of living here build a radar. You just look at someone and think, yeah, not from here.
And honestly, it’s not judgment. It’s just pattern recognition.
The radar never fails.
