And surprisingly, it’s not much of an exaggeration.

It’s completely normal to wake up to chilly fog or drizzle in the morning, enjoy bright sunshine by lunchtime, get caught in a sudden heavy shower in the afternoon, and end the day under a clear sky full of stars and pleasant temperatures.

What makes the Azores even more unique is that these weather changes don’t just happen from one island to another. They can happen on the exact same island, sometimes just a few kilometers apart. In fact, it’s not uncommon for one side of a city to be under dark rain clouds while the other side enjoys blue skies and sunshine.

This happens because the Azores sit in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and the islands are very mountainous due to their volcanic origin. When humid ocean air moves across the islands, those mountains force the air to rise, which quickly forms clouds and rain. Just a few kilometers away, the clouds may already be breaking apart, creating sunshine again. The result is a patchwork of tiny microclimates where the weather can change incredibly fast.

Locals often joke that the weather forecast for the Azores is always “rainy.” But the reality is much more nuanced. When the forecast says rain, it usually means rain somewhere on the island, not necessarily where you are.
