Do Azoreans complain about tourists while living off tourism?

Tourism has become a major part of the Azorean economy across the nine islands. Restaurants are busier, hotels are full for months, new businesses opened because visitors started coming, and many jobs today depend directly or indirectly on tourism. The archipelago is more visible internationally than it has ever been.

At the same time, locals feel the pressure. In summer, it can be hard to book your own favorite restaurant. Hiking trails that used to feel quiet are now crowded. Parking becomes an Olympic sport. And the housing market, especially on São Miguel, has changed dramatically. When foreigners fall in love with the islands and buy property, prices go up. Rent goes up. Young locals feel it first.

So yes, you will hear complaints. Not because people “hate tourists,” but because growth changes daily life. And when change happens fast, it creates friction.

We know tourism helps the economy. We also miss when some places felt slower and more ours.

Both things can be true at the same time. That’s the delicate balance.
