Is it true that in the Azores fireworks go off at 6 in the morning?

During the Festas do Espírito Santo, it’s completely normal to hear fireworks at six or seven in the morning. That’s basically the official “the party starts now” announcement. It’s how the day begins.

For a tourist, it can be shocking. You’re on vacation, half asleep, and suddenly you hear loud explosions outside your window. Boom. Boom. Boom. Welcome to the Azores.

But here’s the thing. These are not the colorful, Instagram-style fireworks you’re imagining. There’s no sky full of glitter and sparkles. It’s mostly sound. Very loud sound. It’s meant to be heard, not admired.

For locals, that noise doesn’t mean panic. It means there’s a festa nearby. There’s food. There’s music. There’s something happening in that parish today.

It’s tradition. It’s ritual. It’s part of the rhythm of Espírito Santo season.

So if you’re visiting in May or June and you hear explosions at sunrise, don’t stress.

It’s not the apocalypse. It’s just the party starting early.
