Is it true that in the Azores we have a Christmas tradition called ‘The Baby Jesus Pees’?
Yes, this is real. And yes, the name sounds completely ridiculous.
It’s called O Menino Mija (The Baby Jesus Pees) and it takes place between December 24th and January 6th. During those days, people go from house to house visiting family and friends. When they arrive, they ask the classic question: “O Menino mija?”
What they’re really asking is simple. Are we drinking?
The tradition supposedly comes from the story of the birth of Baby Jesus. According to folklore, when the baby was born, he urinated. Somehow, over time, that detail evolved into a cultural excuse to visit people and drink homemade liqueurs, aguardente, and whatever strong bottle happens to be open.
The religious explanation is old. The social version is much clearer. It’s an excuse to gather, laugh, catch up, and share a drink during the Christmas season.
You’ll even hear people say, “O Menino mija na minha casa hoje,” which literally means “The baby pees at my house tonight.” What it actually means is: come over, we’re opening bottles.
It’s not wild partying. It’s not clubbing. It’s not chaos. It’s visiting. It’s tradition. It’s Christmas spirit with a bit of alcohol involved.
Strange name. Solid excuse.
Very Azorean.
