Is Pico really the highest mountain in all of Portugal?

Pico is not just the highest mountain in the Azores. It’s the highest point in all of Portugal, mainland and islands included, at 2,351 meters. So yeah, the tallest mountain in the country is sitting in the middle of the Atlantic.

I climbed it years ago in winter because I wanted to see snow at the top, and it did not disappoint. It’s probably the most likely place in the Azores to catch snow, and when it happens, it completely changes the vibe up there.

The hike itself is not crazy hard, but don’t underestimate it. It’s a solid medium, and I’d strongly recommend going with a guide unless you know what you’re doing.

At the top, the view is just ridiculous. You’re above the clouds, everything feels massive, and what really hits you is the silence. No birds, no insects, nothing. Just pure quiet.

    And yeah, funny detail.
The official height is 2,351 meters, but when you get up there, the very top is basically a small man-made marker sticking out of the summit. So that last “extra” meter feels a bit… artificial. Still counts though. 🤣

We were not so lucky. We were catched in fog at the tip. On the way down we had light rain all the time. In a TV documentation it was said, that 1/3 of the attempts to climb it fail due to bad weather.

Well, in my case, we went to Pico to climb the mountain, but had to wait 3 days because the guide said the weather was too bad, too much wind at the top. We got lucky because on the 4th day, game on. 😄
