Only in the Azores does Carnival turn into a battlefield
Yes. This is true.
Batalha das Limas is not just people throwing water for fun. It’s organized chaos tied to Carnival, especially in São Miguel and Terceira. On that specific day, the main avenue is closed, trucks line up, and each truck represents a team. Helmets go on. Game faces switch on. And then it begins.
Wax “limas” filled with water start flying everywhere. Water bags. Direct hits to the head. It hurts. I’ve been there. This is not cute Instagram splashing. It’s a proper street battle.
Businesses along the avenue literally protect their windows with pallets. Some close entirely. You don’t casually walk into the Batalha das Limas unprepared. You gear up.
The tradition dates back to the 19th century, when people actually threw real citrus, oranges and limes. Eventually, the fruit was replaced with wax balls filled with water. Less bruising, same chaos.
Today, it’s more symbolic than violent, but don’t be fooled. When you’re there, soaked, helmet on, getting hit from three directions, it feels very real.
It’s loud, ridiculous, slightly aggressive, and incredibly fun.
And it’s very Azorean.
