    The Azores have microclimates everywhere?

This happens because the islands are volcanic, mountainous, and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. The terrain changes elevation very quickly, especially in places like Sete Cidades.

When humid ocean air hits the mountains and crater walls, the air rises, cools down, and creates clouds, fog, rain, or sudden temperature changes. Meanwhile, another area just a few kilometers away can still be sunny.

That’s why in São Miguel you can literally:

    • leave Ponta Delgada with blue skies

    • drive 20 minutes

    • and suddenly enter thick fog or heavy rain inside Sete Cidades or Furnas.

It’s basically nature trolling tourists on a daily basis 😅

Locals barely trust weather apps here because microclimates make forecasts feel random sometimes. One side of the island can look like paradise while the other side feels like the end of the world. Honestly, that unpredictability is part of what makes the Azores feel wild and different from mainland Europe.
