Alcatra: Azorean Pot Roast
Quick Summary
"Slow-cooked in clay. Cinnamon-heavy. Pure Terceira tradition."
Rui's experience
Alcatra is one of the most traditional dishes from Terceira Island. You don’t see it that often on the other islands, and honestly, that’s part of its identity.
It’s a beef stew cooked for many hours at low temperature inside a traditional clay pot. If it’s done in a wood-fired oven, even better. That’s the real deal.
The meat becomes incredibly tender, almost falling apart. The flavor is deep and very distinctive, especially because of the strong cinnamon presence. Yes, cinnamon in a meat dish. Very old-school recipe. Very Terceira.
It’s not my personal favorite, but I can’t deny it. When done properly, the texture is amazing.
Where to Eat This
If you’re in Terceira Island, it’s relatively easy to find in traditional regional restaurants.
On the other islands, not so much. It’s not impossible, but it’s definitely not common.
