    Azores Pineapple

    Quick Summary

"The king fruit of the Azores, and yes, it absolutely deserves the crown."

    Rui's experience

This is not just pineapple. This is Ananás dos Açores, the king fruit of the islands. If you talk about iconic food from São Miguel, this one is right at the top. Sweet, aromatic, slightly sharp, and way better than the boring supermarket stuff most people know.

And no, before someone gets clever, ananás and abacaxi are not the same thing. Very similar, yes. Same thing, no. Different fruit, different vibe.

It grows really well here because São Miguel has the right climate for it, and the island has a long tradition of producing it. This is not some trendy local product people invented five minutes ago for tourists. Pineapple has been part of São Miguel’s identity for generations, first introduced in the 1800s and later grown in the famous glass greenhouses that became part of its story.

You’ll find it everywhere, fresh, in jams, in sweets, in liqueurs, and in desserts. One of the most famous combinations is morcela com ananás. On paper it sounds a bit random, but it actually works. Salty, sweet, rich, fresh. Very solid starter.

A lot of restaurants also serve pineapple as dessert. People often say it helps with digestion, and that reputation probably comes from the natural enzymes in pineapple. So yeah, maybe not miracle medicine, but it’s not complete BS either.

    Where to Eat This

The easiest place is in restaurants, either fresh as dessert or in dishes like morcela com ananás. If you want to buy one to take with you, Mercado da Graça is one of the best bets in Ponta Delgada. And if you want the full pineapple nerd experience, go to Plantação de Ananás dos Açores. You can visit the greenhouses, learn how it’s grown, and try a bunch of pineapple products like jams, sweets, and other good stuff. The plantation says the greenhouse visit is free and self guided.
