If you ask anyone in São Miguel what the number one dish is, this is it. No debate. This is the GOAT. It’s a steak, yes.
But not just any steak. It’s our beef. Proper quality meat. Cooked simply, but served with the famous regional sauce loaded with garlic.
And I mean loaded. On the plate you’ll get the steak, a fried egg on top, french fries, and pimenta da terra on the side. Simple ingredients. Big flavor. Is it pretty? No. Like most Azorean dishes, it’s not winning presentation awards.
But the taste? Unreal. There have been actual rivalries between restaurants over who serves the best one. Friendly wars. Serious opinions. Strong loyalties. For me, this is it. My favorite dish from São Miguel.
