Fofas da Povoação
Quick Summary
"Soft, messy, dangerously easy to inhale."
Rui's experience
Fofas da Povoação are one of those desserts with a ridiculous name and zero shame. It literally means “fluffy ones from Povoação,” and yeah, translation does not help. Think soft pastry, filled with a super smooth cream that disappears in about ten seconds if you’re not paying attention. They’re light, sweet, and very easy to overeat.
The “best one” debate? Forget it. Every café in Povoação will tell you theirs is the real deal. And honestly, most of them are good. This is one of those cases where you don’t need a ranking system. Just walk into a pastelaria in the city center and order one. Or two. No one’s judging.
For me, it’s good. Not my favorite dessert in the Azores. I’ll eat one happily, but I’m not driving across the island just for it.
Where to Eat This
Povoação city center. Pick a local café or bakery. They all claim to make the best one. That’s part of the fun.
