São Jorge Cheese
Quick Summary
"The king of Azorean cheeses."
Rui's experience
The Azores have cheese everywhere. Every island has its own version. But if we’re talking about the most famous one, it’s Queijo de São Jorge. No debate.
It’s a cow’s milk cheese, aged, firm, and slightly crumbly. When you cut it, it doesn’t slice smoothly like a soft cheese. It breaks. And that texture is part of the experience.
The flavor? Very distinctive. Strong. Slightly spicy. Sharp but balanced. Hard to describe properly until you taste it.
I love it.
You usually eat it with bread, simple and classic. Some people pair it with milk or nuts. And lately, people are even experimenting with it on pizza. Bold move, but it works.
If you’re in the Azores and you don’t try São Jorge cheese, you’re doing it wrong.
Where to Eat This
You can find Queijo de São Jorge in pretty much every supermarket in the Azores.
But for the real experience, try it fresh from São Jorge Island itself.
