Boca do Inferno
São Miguel Island
"One of the best viewpoints on São Miguel. Easy top two."
Rui's experience
My take? Boca do Inferno is one of those places that reminds me how stupidly lucky we are to live on these islands.
The name sounds dramatic, Hell’s Mouth, but what you get is a massive, open view over Sete Cidades that never really gets old. I’ve been here multiple times and it still hits.
You always see Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde.
People love to say you can see three lakes. I think that’s half true. Sometimes, with perfect weather, you might catch Lagoa de Santiago. Most days, you won’t. And honestly, even with two, it’s already more than enough.
There’s a short trail to reach the viewpoint. I don’t find it hard at all, but I wouldn’t recommend it to older people or anyone with bad knees. It goes up and down, uneven ground, nothing crazy, just not flat.
Sunrise here is on another level. If you ask me, this is one of the best sunrise spots on São Miguel.
Summer can be a bit of a mess with people stopping everywhere for photos, but even then, I still think it’s worth it.
Pros
- Amazing view over Sete Cidades
- Incredible sunrise spot
- One of the most rewarding viewpoints on the island
Cons
- Can get crowded in summer
- Trail is not elderly-friendly
- Weather dependent, fog kills the experience

To me this one tops even Vista do Rei. One needs to walk a little bit, which makes it less crowded.
