Cais 20
São Miguel Island
"Come for the small dishes. Stay way longer than planned"
Rui's experience
This place is old school. Proper old school. One of the very few spots on the island open from midday until 4 a.m. You leave the nightclub, you’re hungry, you end up here. It just happens. Food quality is genuinely good. Seafood is solid, fresh, well done. No shortcuts. What they’re really known for are the small plates. Not tapas. Just small dishes, small portions. You order a bunch, put them in the middle, and share with friends. Chicken wings, fried meats, calamari, that kind of thing. If you don’t know what to order, just order something. It’s usually good. They also have a normal menu with full dishes. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive, but the portions are big. Very big. Pro tip: if you do want a main, order one for two people. It’s enough. That said, you don’t have to order a main at all. You can stay the whole night just ordering small plates. Honestly, that’s what I usually do with friends. More fun, more variety, zero regrets. Atmosphere? Very Portuguese. A bit loud, a bit chaotic, very real. No fake fancy BS. Verdict: Perfect for sharing, late nights, and eating way more small dishes than planned.
Pros
- Small plates are excellent and made for sharing
- Open from 12 p.m. to 4 a.m. huge win
- Parking in front and at the back
- Sea view is actually very nice
Cons
- If it’s full, it gets loud. Real fast 😅
