Castelo Branco
São Miguel Island
"A strange white tower with a great view and not much else."
Rui's experience
The Viewpoint of Castelo Branco is basically a white tower sitting on the side of the road on the way to Furnas. It looks a bit like a tiny castle, which is probably why it’s called “Castelo Branco”, meaning White Castle.
You park the car a couple hundred meters away and walk up a very easy gravel path. Nothing technical, nothing steep. Anyone can do it.
Once you get there, you can climb the tower using the stairs inside and reach the top. The view is actually very good. You can see Furnas Lake and the surrounding landscape from above, which is the whole point of this stop.
Personally, I don’t find the place particularly special. It’s nice, but that’s about it. There’s nothing else around it and no reason to stay longer than a few minutes.
That said, if you’re already heading to Furnas, it’s literally on the way. Stop for 10–15 minutes, enjoy the view, take a photo, and move on.
Pros
- Nice elevated view over Furnas Lake
- Very easy access
- Quick stop on the way to Furnas
Cons
- Nothing else around the viewpoint
- Not really worth a dedicated trip
- Most people will be done in 10–15 minutes
