Forno da Cal
São Miguel Island
"A man-made ocean pool that locals either love or completely ignore."
Rui's experience
Forno da Cal is one of those man-made swimming spots carved into the coast. It has a small parking area and easy access to the water, which already puts it ahead of many natural spots around the island.
The sea pool itself is sheltered, but not always calm. Depending on the day, the water can still be a bit bumpy. You can do some light snorkeling here, and on good days the visibility is decent.
Personally, it’s not really my thing. Because it’s a semi-closed area, garbage that drifts in from the ocean sometimes gets trapped there, which kills the vibe a bit.
That said, I know plenty of people who come here every single summer and swear by it. So clearly it works for some people. If you’re curious, give it a try and see which camp you fall into.
Pros
- Easy access and parking
- Sheltered ocean pool
- Decent for casual snorkeling
Cons
- Water can still get a bit rough
- Trash from the ocean sometimes gets stuck inside
- Not the most scenic swimming spot
