"A small historic fort with great views over the Santa Maria marina."

    Rui's experience

Forte de São Brás is a small coastal fort in Santa Maria with a lot of history behind it. It was built after pirate attacks in the early 17th century, when the island needed better protection from raids coming from the sea.

The fort itself isn’t huge, but it’s a nice place to stop and explore for a few minutes. From here you get a great view over the Santa Maria marina and the coastline around it, which makes it worth the visit even if you’re not particularly into history.

It’s one of those small spots that combines a bit of local history with a nice viewpoint. Not a major attraction, but definitely a cool stop if you’re walking around the area.

    Pros

    • Interesting piece of Santa Maria history
    • Nice views over the marina and coastline
    • Quick and easy stop when exploring the area

    Cons

    • Small fort, the visit doesn’t take long
