"The most iconic tea plantation in the Azores and a must-visit on the north coast."

    Rui's experience

Chá Gorreana is very near to Porto Formoso Tea Plantation and is the place to visit if you want to see a real tea plantation in the Azores. This historic factory has been producing tea the same traditional way for generations, and you can walk through the building and see the old machines still running. The whole place feels like stepping into another era of industrial production.

You can watch the process, see the workers packaging tea, taste the tea for free, and then stop by the small café and shop where they sell tea, souvenirs, and light meals. Surrounded by the green tea fields and the north coast landscape, it’s easily one of the most iconic stops on São Miguel.

    My Pro Tips

    • You can taste both the black tea and the green tea for free inside the factory.

    Pros

    • Historic tea factory with working old machines
    • Free tea tasting
    • Beautiful tea fields around the plantation

    Cons

    • Often crowded with tourists

As with most top attractions, one should show up early. We stopped there after hiking to the top of Pico da Vara. The walk through the tea plantation was a nice contrast, but the factory itself and the café were too crowded for us.
