Gruta do Carvão

Gruta do Carvão is one of the most interesting volcanic caves on São Miguel. You can only visit with a guide, and there are two different tours. The regular one takes about an hour and is very accessible. The guide explains how the lava tube formed and shares a lot of cool details about the geology and history of the cave.

There is also a more adventurous tour that goes much deeper into the cave system. From what I was told, it involves crawling through tight passages and exploring parts that most visitors never see. I didn’t do that one, but it sounds pretty intense.

One important thing to know is that you cannot just show up and enter whenever you want. Visits happen in scheduled slots, so it’s best to call ahead and book. You can also go there and wait for the next available tour, but depending on the day it might take a while.

Overall, it’s a really cool experience and one of the best caves you can visit on the island.
