Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião
São Miguel Island
"The most famous church in São Miguel, sitting right in the heart of Ponta Delgada."
Rui's experience
Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is probably the most famous church in São Miguel. It sits right in the absolute center of Ponta Delgada, literally next to the famous Portas da Cidade, so if you’re walking around downtown you will pass by it almost for sure.
The church itself is beautiful, with a classic Azorean style and a dark volcanic stone façade that makes it stand out in the square. It’s not a massive cathedral like you’d find in Spain or mainland Europe, this is still a small island after all, but it’s elegant and full of character.
Even if you’re not particularly interested in churches, it’s worth stopping by for a few minutes. The location alone makes it one of the most photographed spots in the city, and the contrast between the church, the square, and the Portas da Cidade creates a really nice setting for photos.
My Pro Tips
