Lagoa do Fogo
São Miguel Island
"Top-tier lake on São Miguel, but very weather dependent."
Rui's experience
I’ve been to Lagoa do Fogo more times than I can count. A lot of people call it the most beautiful lake on the island. I don’t agree. But yeah, it’s easily top three. No discussion there. It’s high up, untouched, no cafés, no bathrooms, no crap around it. Just the lake and nature. That alone already puts it above many others. You can experience it in two ways. The lazy way: drive up, stop the car, take the photo, leave. The right way: take the trail down to water level and walk part of the lake from below. The trail down is not a joke. It’s steep, legs will feel it, especially on the way back up. But once you’re down there, it’s a completely different experience. Quiet, massive, beautiful. Totally worth the effort. Now the big downside: weather. This lake lives high in the clouds. If there’s fog, low clouds, or bad weather, forget it. You’ll see absolutely nothing. Zero. On a good day, it’s stunning. On a bad day, it’s pointless.
Pros
- One of the top three lakes on São Miguel
- No facilities, feels untouched
Cons
- Very weather dependent

A very beautiful lake, we had been looking forward to visiting this place. But we were very disappointed to learn that the trail down to the lake was closed. Not temporarily (?) but closed by fences and signs saying it was forbidden to walk down the trail.
