Mata - Jardim José do Canto
São Miguel Island
"Raw, dramatic, and absolutely top tier."
Rui's experience
This one is not really a “cute garden”. It’s more like a proper park with serious character. And honestly, it’s top notch.
I’ve only been here once, but it left a strong impression. It’s paid, but cheap, and once you’re inside it’s obvious why. This place is wild in the best possible way. Very raw, very natural, and visually strong.
You’ve got massive trees, insane greenery, statues, a waterfall, and that old Gothic chapel sitting there like something out of a dark fairytale. The amount of plant life is impressive, and the whole place feels heavy with history.
It’s right next to Lagoa das Furnas, which just makes everything better. You’re walking around surrounded by nature, old structures, and zero artificial vibes.
There aren’t many places to sit, so this isn’t a “bring a book and chill for two hours” kind of park. This is more about walking, looking, and absorbing the place.
If you’re in Furnas, skipping this doesn’t make much sense.
Pros
- Very strong wow factor
- Raw and natural atmosphere
- Waterfall, statues, and historic chapel
- Huge variety of plant life
Cons
- Paid entry
- Not many resting areas
- Not ideal if you just want to sit and relax
