Mercado da Vila
São Miguel Island
"Great space. Confusing concept. Overpriced food."
Rui's experience
Mercado da Vila has a very strange concept. And when I say strange, I don’t even mean it in a good or bad way. Just… strange. The restaurant is divided into different sections. Mediterranean food in one, Japanese in another, Italian somewhere else. On paper, it sounds interesting. In reality, it feels confusing and unfocused. The food itself is good. Fine-dining style, well presented, technically correct. But here’s the problem: when the bill arrives, things don’t match. For the same price, you can eat much better fine dining in São Miguel. That’s where this place really loses me. The quality doesn’t justify the cost. Where Mercado da Vila absolutely shines is the space. They renovated an old fish market, and the building is beautiful. The atmosphere is genuinely cool, well designed, and enjoyable to be in. And yes, random detail, but worth mentioning: One of the best bathrooms I’ve ever seen in a restaurant. Seriously. Still, atmosphere alone isn’t enough. Between the confusing concept and the price-to-quality gap, I don’t really have plans to go back.
Pros
- Beautiful renovated building
- Very cool atmosphere
Cons
- Confusing food concept
- Food quality doesn’t justify the price
- Better fine-dining options available for the same money
