O Patanisca
São Miguel Island
"A normal Portuguese restaurant hiding the best sushi I’ve ever had. No joke."
Rui's experience
Pataniska is one of those places that completely messes with your expectations. When you walk in, it looks like a normal Portuguese restaurant. Nothing about it screams sushi. Honestly, the first reaction is usually something like, “Wait… this is the sushi place?” I had exactly the same reaction.
But then the food arrives, and it’s a completely different story. Pataniska has a separate sushi menu, and the sushi chef is Brazilian. The guy is a genius. The sushi is incredibly fresh and creative, with combinations that sound weird on paper but work unbelievably well. It’s easily the best sushi I’ve ever had in any restaurant.
To be fair, I didn’t try the Portuguese dishes, so I can’t judge the rest of the menu. People around us seemed happy with their food, but we went there specifically for the sushi. And wow, what a surprise. It’s not cheap, but the quality absolutely justifies the price. If you like sushi, this place is a must.
Pros
- Some of the best sushi you’ll find anywhere, not just in São Miguel
- Very fresh fish and creative combinations
- Talented Brazilian sushi chef who clearly knows what he’s doing
- Separate sushi menu alongside the Portuguese restaurant menu
Cons
- The restaurant doesn’t look like a sushi place at all, which can be confusing
- Not a cheap meal
