Piscina Natural da Ponta da Ferraria
São Miguel Island
"A hot bath in the sea. Yes, literally."
Rui's experience
This is one of those places that sounds fake until you’re actually in it. Ponta da Ferraria is not a pool and not really a beach, it’s the ocean, with a natural volcanic pool where the sea water heats up. The temperature depends entirely on the tide. At high tide, the water can be around 18–19°C (64–66°F) and feels pretty normal. At low tide, it can easily reach 29–30°C (84–86°F) and turns into a proper hot bath in salt water. In winter, with cold air and rough weather, this place is absolutely surreal. Just don’t expect a calm, spa-like soak. It’s still the Atlantic. Waves, wind, and water movement are part of the experience. You’re not sitting still on a rock, you’re constantly adjusting and swimming. That’s the trade-off.
Pros
- Hot sea water at low tide
- Works even in winter
- Completely natural, no artificial pool feeling
Cons
- Temperature changes a lot with the tide
- Can be rough and bumpy
- Not a place to fully relax or stay still
- Heavily dependent on weather and sea conditions
