Piscinas Naturais dos Mosteiros
São Miguel Island
"Raw lava. Crystal water. Zero man-made BS."
Rui's experience
I only started coming here about five years ago and, honestly, I was missing out big time.
The Piscinas Naturais dos Mosteiros, also known locally as Piscinas dos Caneiros, are one of the most unique swimming experiences on the island. Nothing here is man-made. These pools were shaped by lava and the ocean, and that’s exactly what makes them special.
This isn’t just one pool. You walk around 200–300 meters along the coast and you’ll find several natural pools, all slightly different. Some are calmer, some deeper, some perfect for snorkeling. Don’t just stop at the first one, explore a bit.
One of the pools has bathrooms and facilities, the others don’t, but they’re very close to each other, so it’s not a problem.
The water is insanely good. Clear, fresh, and easily one of the best snorkeling spots in São Miguel.
My Pro Tips
- →Bring rubber water shoes. Everything is lava rock. Sharp, uneven, and not friendly to bare feet.
- →Don’t forget to bring a snorkeling mask
Pros
- 100% natural, no concrete or fake structures.
- Multiple pools to choose from.
- One of the best snorkeling spots on the island.
Cons
- Not ideal for kids, rocks everywhere, constant attention needed.
- Uncomfortable to relax for long periods, rocks are not sand.
- Water shoes are basically mandatory.
