"In my opinion, this is the sunrise spot on São Miguel."

    Rui's experience

Ponta da Madrugada is famous, but not really because of the view itself. The view is nice, don’t get me wrong, but this place is all about one thing: sunrise. The name already gives it away. Madrugada means the very beginning of the morning, and yeah, that’s exactly what this place delivers. If you want to see the sun coming up over the Atlantic, this is the GOAT spot on the island. I’ve done it once in my life, and honestly, it was an amazing experience. With good weather and no clouds, it feels almost unreal. Quiet, dark, then slowly everything lights up. Magical is not an exaggeration here. That said, it’s not exactly convenient. It’s in Nordeste, far from my place, and to catch the sunrise you need to wake up stupidly early. For me, this feels like a one time or maybe twice in a lifetime thing. If you don’t care about sunrise, you can still come here during the day. The viewpoint is well maintained, has facilities, and the view is still solid. But let’s be honest, sunrise is the main event.

    My Pro Tips

    • If you’re coming here specifically for the sunrise, my advice is to arrive late at night and sleep in the car. Set an alarm for around 5 or 6 in the morning and you’ll get way more rest than driving from home. You won’t sleep like a king, but hey, you’ll actually see the sunrise. Worth it.

    Pros

    • Best sunrise viewpoint on São Miguel, in my opinion

    Cons

    • Requires waking up extremely early
