Portas da Cidade
São Miguel Island
"The monument that basically says: “Yep, you’re in Ponta Delgada.”"
Rui's experience
The Portas da Cidade literally means “City Gates”, and if there’s one monument that represents Ponta Delgada, this is it. Not a cathedral, not a palace. These three arches.
Back in the day, the sea used to reach this area, and this was basically the entry point to the city. Boats would arrive, people would get off with cargo, and this was the symbolic gateway into Ponta Delgada.
Later the waterfront was expanded and the whole area turned into a square, but the arches stayed. Today they sit right in the heart of the city, surrounded by cafés, the church, and the main square.
Let’s be honest though. If you compare it with big European monuments, it’s not exactly mind-blowing. It’s just three arches.
But for people from Ponta Delgada, this is the symbol of the city. If you’ve seen a postcard from here, chances are it had the Portas da Cidade on it.
And yes, it’s also one of the most photographed spots on the island. Instagram loves this place.
