    Praia da Caloura

    São Miguel Island

"I’ve been here maybe twice. And there’s a reason."

    Rui's experience

The access is annoying. Not hard, just a lot of stairs. The kind that makes you think twice, especially if you’re carrying stuff or have kids. You commit going down, and then you really have to commit coming back up.

The beach itself is… fine. Very natural, very raw. Sometimes it’s sandy, other times it’s basically stones everywhere. It changes a lot, and not always for the better.

It’s a very closed beach, hills on both sides, which sounds nice until mid afternoon when the sun basically disappears. Shade is cool, but this one overdoes it. You’re not here for sunbathing.

This is more of an explore once, look around, say “ok” and move on kind of beach.

    Pros

    • Nice spot if you like exploring and quiet corners.
    • Good contrast to the more busy beaches on the island.

    Cons

    • Too many stairs. Going down is fine, coming back up is pain.
    • Sun disappears early because of the hills.
