Vista do Rei
São Miguel Island
"In my opinion, the number one viewpoint in the Azores. Yes, all of it."
Rui's experience
My take? If I had to rank viewpoints across the entire Azores, Vista do Rei would sit comfortably at number one. This is the image people think of when they hear Azores. Inside Portugal, outside Portugal, doesn’t matter. The classic Sete Cidades photo everyone shares? It’s taken right here. This viewpoint is basically the Azores’ calling card. The name fits. King’s View is not an exaggeration. The view is massive, clean, perfectly framed, and impossible to mess up even with bad photography skills. The viewpoint is very well maintained and was renovated a few years ago, which made it even better. You’ve got bathrooms, snack stands, people selling small things. Real facilities, not just a rock and a prayer. If you come to São Miguel and skip this, honestly, that’s on you. This is like going to Rome and not seeing the Colosseum. You have to come here. Now, the downside. Summer. Buses, cars, people everywhere. It can get chaotic and loud, and the calm vibe disappears fast. But that’s the price of greatness. You don’t get the best view in the Azores without sharing it.
Pros
- Best viewpoint in the Azores, in my opinion
- Iconic view over Lagoa das Sete Cidades
- Bathrooms and snack facilities
- Easy access, no hiking needed
Cons
- Extremely crowded in summer
